MedStar Hosting "Riding for Life" Event to Bring Awareness to First Responder Stress and Suicide

"First responders are heroes who run towards danger every day in order to save the lives of others. They are also human beings, and their work exerts a toll on their mental health."

Jay Ruderman, President of the Ruderman Family Foundation

According to a recently released study, by the Ruderman Foundation, in 2017, there were at least 140 police officer suicides, 103 firefighter suicides and 17 suicides of emergency medical technicians.

According to a study published the September 2018 issue of the Journal of Pre-hospital Emergency Care, the proportion of deaths attributed to suicide among EMTs was 5.2% while the percentage among non-EMTs was 2.2%

To bring awareness of this growing issue - MedStar is hosting a motorcycle ride on 9/15 to bring awareness to the impact of stress on our First Responder community…
